Captain Ryan Portmann began his career in 1997 with the Snohomish Police Department. Captain Portmann made a lateral move to the Renton Police Department in 1999. Captain Portmann’s final move was to the Puyallup Police Department in 2003. Captain Portmann has served in a variety of assignments as an officer throughout his career, working as a Patrol Officer, Police Training Officer, and Problem Oriented Policing Officer.
Captain Portmann was promoted to sergeant in 2005. As a sergeant, Captain Portmann served as a Patrol Sergeant, Criminal Investigations Sergeant and an Administrative Sergeant. Captain Portmann held the rank of sergeant until 2003 when he was promoted captain.
As a captain, Captain Portmann has served in the Investigations, Operations, and Professional Services Divisions. Captain Portmann also is the Department’s Public Information Officer (PIO).
Captain Portmann holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Western Washington University and is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy (NA Session #263).
Captain Portmann has deep ties to Pierce County, having grown up on the area. Captain Portmann feels fortunate to serve in Puyallup’s wonderful and supportive community and can’t imagine working anywhere else.
When not at work, Captain Portmann enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters on their boat.
